Maritime Coordinator

Summary 

The Maritime Coordinator focuses on coordinating and implementing a maritime focused curriculum for the Argonaut Extended Learning Program for 9-12 grade students, ensuring that the students are learning core maritime skills and working towards maritime focused certifications. In addition, the Maritime Coordinator coordinates additional maritime focused student field trips and supports the Davis A & M High School maritime classroom curriculum. The position reports to the Director of Programming.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop maritime focused after school lesson plans that are engaging and educational for all the students building on skills from year to year. This lesson plan will align with Ohio Board of Education Standards and MARAD education standards.
  • Facilitate and lead the students on field trips that provide them exposure to the water and hands-on experience with maritime activities on the water, such as fishing, kayaking, swimming, sailing.
  • Facilitate and lead job shadowing and career exploration opportunities in the maritime field.
  • Support teachers with implementing maritime experiential learning, project based learning, boat building, and seamanship certification in the classroom.
  • Assist with the facilitation of the Freshman Immersion Program, including but not limited to organizing activities, facilitating a group of students, and/or coordinating the Davis Staff.
  • Assist with the development of maritime based family engagement activities, training, and programming.
  • Maintain documentation and attendance for programming data to support and evaluate maritime activities, programs, and certifications. Support program design, development and implementation including clear objectives and goals, collection and tracking of associated data and demonstration of progress towards goals.
  • Support Physical Education Teacher in facilitating First Aid & CPR training for the Davis students.
  • With support from the Director of Programming and the Programming Manager, develop and implement professional development opportunities for Davis A&M staff around maritime.
  • *Serve as the Argonaut and Davis main point of contact for maritime programming and planning. *
  • Occasional weekend, holiday, and evening hours may be required.

Skills and Experience

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

Education/Degrees: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

Experience: 3-5 years in a maritime career or related experience. Knowledge of Cleveland and the Cuyahoga River, Cleveland landmarks, and radio etiquette. Demonstrate evidence working in K-12 educational environments and/or demonstration of working in youth development and social emotional learning.

Skills, Knowledge and Personal Characteristics:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to conduct outreach, group facilitation, and presentation.
  • Strong self-initiative and self-management, ability to work both in a team setting and solo.
  • Ability to coordinate, organize/maintain records, and be proactive with all position duties.
  • Strong critical thinking, interpersonal and dispute resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and high attention to detail.
  • Proficient swimmer and Lifeguard or ability to earn ARC Lifeguard certification.
  • Strong computer skills including productivity applications including Microsoft Office and Google Apps.
  • Certified Ohio Boater Education Course Instructor, or willing to earn the credential upon hiring.
  • Ohio Driver’s License, clean driving record within 12 months of hiring.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to utilize a cell phone, GPS, computer and other office equipment. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with/without reasonable accommodations, including but not limited to: standing for long periods of time, walking, kneeling, lifting up to 50lbs, a strong sense of balance, working in all outdoor weather conditions, and the ability to swim.
