Summary

Oversee the operation of a variety of maritime boats. This will include training and inspections of all crew.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates maritime boats timely and safely and coordinates all available resources to this end and to the service of the customer.
  • Ensures the maritime boat, weather, and boat planning meets operational requirements.
  • Ensures the maritime boat is serviceable and seaworthy prior to commending a trip; meaning all discrepancies are either closed or deferred, the required certificates and manuals are on board, proper amount and grade of fuel is loaded, and weight and balance distributed accordingly.
  • Supervises the boat crew, which includes Medics, students, volunteers, and anyone aboard maritime boat and directs the activities of the Second in Command and ensuring boat crew members understand what individual duties they are expected to perform.
  • Attends regularly scheduled ground, simulator, and safety training; maintains proficiency and knowledge of all boat operations, regulations and systems
  • Conducts boat operations in accordance with international, federal, state, local and corporate regulations.
  • Reports all known or suspected violations or incidents promptly to the Maritime Director of Operations.
  • Records all maintenance discrepancies on the maintenance discrepancy form.
  • Ensures all receipts are collected and given to accounting personnel.
  • Transports vessels when necessary.
  • Operate marine electronics equipment, VHF, radar, sonar, and GPS
  • Searches for and reports hazards.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Education and/or Experience – High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Language Skills – Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
  • Mathematical Skills – Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Computer Skills – To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient with maritime electronics. This role requires basic computer skills.
  • Other Qualifications – Valid driver’s license is required; valid US Coast Guard Master’s Maritime license is required, maintains current required licenses and certificates to comply with Coastguard requirements.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time while operating the maritime boat. They constantly operate motorized equipment and boats. The individual needs to occasionally move about on the boat of or at the marina or dock to transport and other necessary items. Most of the activities involve fine and gross manipulations of items. They must be able to exchange accurate information with other individuals in the office, boat, marina, or dock. Must be able to detect mechanical issues and part defects from short distances to determine what action needs to be taken. They must regularly lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 60 pounds.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; extreme heat or cold; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Due to exposure of machinery and electrical currents, employees are required to wear personal protective equipment. During warmer months, the required personal protective equipment may cause the employee to be very warm while working. The individual will be exposed to loud machinery or equipment.
